Naturalisation Fees in 2025
If you’re looking to apply to become a British citizen via Naturalisation, then you’ll be required to pay the government fee, which is currently £1,630 for adults and £1,214 for children under the age of 18. These fees incorporate the citizenship ceremony fee of £130 (where applicable) and the standard cost of a biometric appointment. The fee is set to rise in April 2025 to £1,735 after the Home Office proposed an increase in the application fee in January 2025.
Naturalisation – The Final Step
Naturalisation represents the final step in the immigration journey for most migrants, allowing them to obtain British citizenship, a British passport, and rights comparable to those of anyone who is British from birth. If you’re on Indefinite Leave to Remain and considering an application, you should read our comprehensive guide to Naturalisation, which provides a complete overview of the requirements, process and timescales for making an application.
Once you’re ready to make an application, you’ll need to create an online application and pay the relevant fees. However, it’s important to note that it’s not just the government fee that you’ll need to pay, there are various other costs that you could also incur.
Other Fees for Naturalisation You Might Need to Pay
As well as the application fee there are various other costs that could be associated with making an application for Naturalisation:
- Life in the UK Test Fee – As part of the eligibility requirements for Naturalisation you will need to have passed the Life in the UK Test. While you can re-use the test result from your Indefinite Leave to Remain application, you should still factor in the £50 application fee as part of the cost.
- English Language Test Fee – Each applicant for Naturalisation will need to demonstrate they meet the English language requirement. Depending on the time between your ILR application and Naturalisation, you may need to retake another English language test if your previous test result has expired. These tests typically cost in the range of £80 to £150. If you’re able to satisfy the English language requirement through nationality or education, then you’ll be exempt from taking the test.
- Translations – If any of your supporting documents are not in English they will need to be translated by an approved translator. The translation cost varies by the document’s size and complexity. As most documents will have been required previously, it’s unlikely any additional translations will be required for Naturalisation.
- Citizenship Ceremony Fee – Once your application for Naturalisation has been approved, you’ll need to attend a Citizenship Ceremony. The fee for this is included in the government fee for adults, but crucially not for children. Therefore, if the child becomes an adult during the application process, e.g. they turn 18, they will need to pay the additional £130 for the Citizenship Ceremony.
- Passport Application Fee – Once you become a British citizen, you can apply for a British passport. However, there is an additional cost for this, and it is also a separate application. Adult online applications currently cost £94.50, while online child applications cost £61.50.
Depending on your circumstances, you could incur additional fees. However, 99% of applications will only need to pay the above costs (where these costs are applicable).
Unlike most other visa applications, it is not possible to utilise a priority service for a Naturalisation application. This means all applications are treated the same and subject to the standard processing time. This is currently around 6 months, although this timescale can vary slightly throughout the year. As applicants need to be settled in the UK and hold ILR, there are no restrictions on travelling during the process.
